Movement as Prevention: Building an Injury-Resilient Routine
Most people think about physiotherapy as something that happens after an injury. But a good amount of physiotherapy training is actually about a concept that applies just as much before anything goes wrong: how the body adapts to load, and what happens when that adaptation gets outpaced.
The Load Tolerance Idea
Tissues in the body , muscles, tendons, ligaments, bone , get stronger in response to load, but only when that load increases gradually enough for the tissue to adapt. This is a well-established concept in movement science and rehabilitation: the body doesn't respond well to load, it responds well to progressive load. A tendon that's used to light activity and suddenly takes on a heavy new demand hasn't had time to build the capacity to handle it, which is a common contributor to overuse injury.
Why Sudden Increases in Activity Are a Common Injury Contributor
This shows up constantly in ordinary life, not just in elite sport: someone who hasn't run in months signs up for a 10K and jumps straight into 5-day-a-week training. Someone spends a sedentary winter and then does a full weekend of yard work in April. A weekend warrior plays one intense pickup game after months of sitting at a desk. In each case, the issue usually isn't the activity itself , running, gardening, and pickup basketball are all fine , it's the size and speed of the jump from "what the body is used to" to "what's being asked of it now."
Mobility and Strength as a Foundation
Two things tend to make tissues more tolerant of load over time: adequate mobility through the joints being used, and a baseline level of strength in the muscles supporting them. Neither needs to be extreme , the goal isn't peak athletic performance, it's having enough range of motion and strength that ordinary activity doesn't outpace what your body is prepared for. This is a large part of why a general strength and mobility routine, even a modest one done consistently, tends to hold up better over time than sporadic, low-frequency activity.
A General Framework for Progression
Without prescribing specifics for any individual (that's what an assessment is for), the general pattern that tends to work is:
- Increase one variable at a time , either how often, how long, or how hard, not all three at once.
- Build in recovery between sessions that push a new limit, rather than stacking hard days back to back.
- Pay attention to how the body responds in the 24โ48 hours after a new activity level, not just during it.
- Treat a return from time off (illness, injury, a busy season of life) as a restart, not a resume from where you left off.
When a Movement Assessment Is Worth Getting , Even Without Pain
You don't need to be injured to benefit from a movement assessment. If you're planning a significant jump in activity , training for an event, starting a new sport, returning to exercise after a long break , a baseline assessment can flag asymmetries, mobility restrictions, or strength gaps before they turn into a problem partway through training.
